Discovery: Boldly Rediscovering What We Already Knew

So let’s talk about Star Trek Discovery (or DIS because ST:D is a bad abbreviation) Discovery and me have a love hate relationship. I love that we have a new Star Trek show coming out, but I hate that it’s so re-imagined. Now I hate Discovery, and when I say this the first thing I usually get is “It’s because there’s a woman captain right?” my answer to this is well this image….

After that its normally the race card. My answer to that is a long rant about how DS9 is my favorite of the six Star Trek series and how the show was built on diversity and if your stupid enough to say that then you don’t know Trek. Also, one day I’ll have a long blog post about how amazing Captain Benjamin Sisko was compared to the other captains.

But back on course, I hate Discovery for how far it goes beyond the continuity. Star Trek has always been amazing at keeping continuity. Be it the design of ship or the history of the federation everything has been well explained and well documented. Now I would love a prequel set before TOS and after ENT but Discovery is looking like a flop when it comes to continuity. I’ll do a longer post about this topic but for now I just want to do a broad outline of what I think about the show.
Now I have hope left for Discovery. I would love to see the Federation in its early days when the galaxy was still vast and there wasn’t a starbase at every corner. I would love to see the Enterprise NCC-1701 in its earliest days under Captain Pike, maybe even a cameo from Robert April. This is also the height of the lives of the Klingons Kang, Koloth and Kor! How epic would it be to see younger versions of those three on screen rampaging around the galaxy! Speaking of the Klingons…
I don’t care what they say or how they explain it I HATE the new Klingons. I grew up watching Trek loving the Klingon people, the episodes with them were the best always full of adventure and honor, but now I fear that they will be degraded into a pale imitation of their former selves. I don’t want to see the legendary Klingons of Star Trek history in the new form. I don’t even want to see the Enterprise if it won’t look like it did all those years ago.
Before I close the channel let me restate that I am excited for the new series. Its Star Trek on TV! Something we are so lucky to see again! I just wish that what we had gotten was a bit closer to to the universe I know and love…
